As mentioned in William Estupinan’s article on Low Rolling Resistance tires, SmartWay-verified tires are fast becoming the rule, rather than the exception for premium long haul tire options. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has defined a standard of Rolling Resistance Coefficients that, when applied to the construction of certain tires, increase fuel efficiency by a minimum of 3%.
In order to certify that a radial meets SmartWay Rolling Resistance standards, truck tire manufacturers must send their tires to certified laboratories for stringent testing. If the test results meet the requirements, manufacturers submit the test data to the EPA for official verification.
The GT979FS, available in 295/75R22.5 and 285/75R24.5 size options, is also backed by a 72-month limited warranty. The standard GT979 sizes are not SmartWay-verified.
